Coventry Blaze head coach Danny Stewart says the deal to land Swedish defenceman Gustav Ahnelöv happened very quickly – but is pleased to get it done.
Stewart announced the signing of the 21-year-old Swede on local radio as the Blaze added to their ranks with the talented young D-man.
And the Blaze coach highlighted the qualities Ahnelöv has and what he will bring to their team this season.
“This deal happened very quickly and we couldn’t be happier to get a young lad like Gustav on board next season,” Stewart said.
“Having already played 15 SHL games and a full season in the Allsvenskan at the age of 21 is very impressive.
“He has good size, skates very well and is very sound at both ends of the ice. What we also liked was his grit.
“Gustav competes and doesn’t shy away from the physicality of the game which will help in his transition to our league.”
During the past season, the right-shooter spent time on loan to VIK Västerås and IK Oskarshamn of in the Allsvenskan, playing 43 times and registering five goals and nine points.
The player is excited to came to the UK and pledged to give his all for the Blaze as they look to improve on their fortunes last season.
He said: “I have heard a lot of good things about the British Elite League and it seems like a fun league to play in.
“I am a player who will give it 100% every night, make good plays from my own end and who tries to contribute in the offensive zone too.
“I look forward to joining the club and getting the season started.”
