Sheffield Steelers hit Manchester Storm for six in their opening Challenge Cup game to take points on the road in Altrincham.
Last season’s runners-up in the competition put themselves two up by the end of the opening period as Matthieu Roy and Colton Fretter both found the net on the powerplay.
Robert Dowd added a third in the second period to give them a healthy lead, but Storm started to claw their way back into contention.
Dallas Ehrhardt and Ryan Trenz both found the net for Ryan Finnerty’s side to close the deficit to one, but that was increased to two again late in the middle session.
Andreas Valdix was the man on target as Paul Thompson’s men began to take control of the game again.
Although Chris Auger pulled Manchester back into contention with a shorthanded goal, it was the visitors who killed things off late on, courtesy of goals from Roy, with his second and Jonas Westerling.
