The Elite Ice Hockey League could get two places in next season’s Champions Hockey League – if Belfast Giants win the IIHF Continental Cup.
The CHL’s Sport Board approved earlier this week a decision to award an additional place to the league’s of Great Britain, Belarus and Poland should their Continental Cup representatives win the tournament. Therefore the EIHL will get an additional place if:
- Belfast win the Continental Cup (as before). In this case the League Winners will also make the CHL.
- Belfast win the Continental Cup and win the EIHL League Title. In this case our Playoff Winners will also receive a CHL place (change to last season).
Kazakh side Arlan Kokshetau are not eligible for the CHL should the win the Continental Cup. If they do, the CHL place will be returned to the Sport Board to allocate on a Wild Card basis. The Continental Cup Final tournament will be hosted by Belfast Giants over 11-13 January 2019.
The EIHL was awarded two places in the 2017/18 season when Nottingham Panthers won the Continental Cup in 2018.
