Sunday’s schedule continues with important games at both ends

February 10, 2019 7:00 am

It’s back to it on Sunday night for nine of the teams that were in action yesterday, while Fife play their only game of the weekend.

1600 Nottingham Panthers vs. Belfast Giants (Tickets)

The rematch of last Sunday’s meeting in Belfast, this time the Panthers welcome the Giants to Nottingham. Both sides will need the win for different reasons – the Giants to keep up the chase on Cardiff at the top, while for the Panthers they’re aiming to end a run of two straight losses and try to stay clear of Glasgow chasing below.

1700 Dundee Stars vs. Glasgow Clan (Tickets | Webcast)

The Stars’ loss last night in MK means this Scottish derby has some added importance for both teams. Dundee are a point outside of the playoff places with a game in hand, but are now on a run of three losses in a row. Clan meanwhile could end the day in third if they win and Panthers lose, but with five games in hand against the Nottingham side they are in their sights. Two consecutive wins has also started to put the Glasgow side a comfortable few points clear of the teams below them.

1715 Coventry Blaze vs. Sheffield Steelers (Tickets | Webcast)

With only two wins in their last five, Coventry are at risk of starting to fall adrift of the playoff places. They trail now by only two points, and have games in hand, but facing a team at home who are only three above will be the kind of game they need to win to keep in touch. Sheffield have three wins in their last four and are a point clear in the playoff places. The Steelers however know that they’ve played more games than the teams around them, so certainly can’t afford to drop points to sides they’re battling with for position.

1800 Guildford Flames vs. Cardiff Devils (Tickets)

To be fair to them, Guildford have had one of the hardest weekends in the EIHL – two games in Belfast followed by the league leaders at home, it doesn’t get much harder. They leave Belfast with what could be a valuable OT point from Friday night, that has them in joint fifth. Their form of late however hasn’t been great, with five wins only in the last 15 games. Cardiff on the other hand remain top by a point thanks to last night’s late winner over Coventry, extending their unbeaten run to two since losing in Manchester.

1830 Fife Flyers vs. Manchester Storm (Tickets | Webcast)

Fife play their only game of the week at home to Manchester, themselves now having slipped to place six and only two points safe in the playoffs. The Flyers have played significantly fewer games than the teams around them, but have been on the slide from previously comfortable in the top four. An OT win over Glasgow last weekend ended their losing streak. Manchester have two losses in a row after a pair of wins over Cardiff & Sheffield, but it’s the Storms’ away form that is lacking at the moment. Only 13 points from 22 road games is why the Storm aren’t as high as their home performances would merit.
