Coventry Blaze 5-2 MK Lightning
Coventry Blaze celebrated a much-needed four-point weekend as they completed a double over Milton Keynes.
It only took Coventry’s Dillon Lawrence four minutes to open the scoring at the Skydome – capitalising on his own rebound to beat Milton Keynes keeper Adam Goss on the power play. The teams traded powerplays before Flodquist would chalk up his second point of the evening with an even strength goal with just under 90 seconds left in the period, sliding the puck between Goss’s open legs after making the initial save from Ivan Puzić’s point shot.
The second period started just as quick for Coventry as the first, Thom Flodquist adding his second goal of the game to extend the Blaze’s lead, a good entry to the zone from Alex Nikiforuk found Flodquist in the slot to beat Goss over the blocker side with a smart finish. Milton Keynes created chances on the powerplay but couldn’t find a way past the Blaze Netminder Hackett for the rest of the period. Milton Keynes would continue the theme of fast goals at the beginning of the third when Robbie Baillargeon scored with a nifty fore hand back hand move when face to face with Hackett, which was set up by a sharp stretch pass from James Griffin. The Lightning grew into the game creating pressure and chances from a strong forecheck. This left the Lightning vulnerable at the back however, giving Ben Lake and Tim Crowder a two on one breakaway, Lake finding Crowder at the back door to restore the three-goal deficit. The Blaze scored again under a minute later as Kevin Morris was first to a David Clements point shot that was first to a David Clements point shot that was the first blocked by a Milton Keynes defender.
Georgs Golovkors would bring the margin back down to three with an unassisted breakaway with just under 10 minutes left in the game. Hackett pulled off a series of saves at the end of the game to keep the score at 5-2 and secure an important four-point weekend for the Blaze in the run into the end of the season.
