Belfast Giants 1-2 Cardiff Devils
Cardiff are the 2019 PredictorBet Playoff Champions! The Devils ran out winners after a tight final at the Motorpoint Arena.
The final game of this season 2018/19 came down to the top two teams of the year: League and Challenge Cup champions Belfast Giants up against league runners up the Cardiff Devils to battle it out for the playoff crown.
The Devils struck first with a goal from Mike Hedden, with little over three minutes left before the end of the first, Hedden’s marker would prove to be the only goal of the opening two periods, with a solid penalty kill at the end of the opening 20 minutes seeing them through.
The tight physical play continued in the second with both teams working towards the games second goal, however it didn’t come for either team as strong defence and some top goaltending came through to cancel out both attacks. The Giants came closest to scoring in the second period with chance coming off the post and being cleared off the Devils goal line. Belfast pushed on the powerplay at the end of the period, but Ben Bowns pulled off a miraculous glove save to keep the Devils up by one going into the final frame.
There were shades of the Semi-Final when the Giants finally got themselves on the board in the third period as Kevin Raine’s shot from the blueline after a faceoff found its was through past Bowns. However after some nice passing Gleason Fournier was the on-rushing Devils’ player on a 2-on-1 to deke around Beskorowany and put the Devils ahead with just over seven and a half minutes to go.
Belfast tried to tie it late, but Bowns stood tall and Cardiff secured the Playoff Title for the second season in succession.
