Every goal under automatic review from Semis onwards
New video review system being trialed during Elite Series
The Elite Ice Hockey League's Hockey Operations will automatically review every goal scored in the 2021 Elite Series, starting today in the Semi-Final first legs.
During the course of the round-robin, the EIHL has been trialing a video review system from US-based company Sporfie, which provides review software for the AHL and ECHL.
Any reviews called in the round-robin were checked by the game officials on a tablet, in contact with Hockey Operations elsewhere in the arena. Starting in the Semi-Finals, Hockey Operations will check each goal immediately after it's scored - just as happens at IIHF World Championships.
In addition, Hockey Operations will now review no-goal decisions in real-time. This means that if video review shows a goal being scored, but the play has continued, a 'hard-buzzer' will sound in order to award the goal if the play has yet to be whistled down. The clock will be reset to the time the goal was awarded.
Coaches still have the option to call a "Coach's Challenge" on top of the automatic reviews.
What's in the review system?
In addition to the main eight-camera main broadcast feed, the video review system also contains: one camera behind each net and one camera above each net.
Starting in the Semi-Finals, Hockey Operations will also use cameras on each blueline to check for offside plays, as well as reviewing for hand passes, high-sticks and pucks out of bounds in the lead-up to goals.
