Cox suspended for one game
Devils forward suspended for spearing
On Saturday night in Cardiff, Devils forward #63 Trevor Cox was assessed a minor penalty for Slashing.
As the video shows, Cox is skating behind his goal net with his stick raised off the ice in a horizontal position. He uses the toe of his stick to jab and make contact with unsuspecting Blaze defenceman Nathanael Halbert. This is spearing.
The reason for supplementary discipline is the choice of contact Cox makes with Halbert. This isn’t a hockey play. Regardless of puck possession, all contact here, especially with the stick, is completely avoidable. The use of the stick in this manner is reckless with a high potential to injure Halbert, who is unaware and unable to protect himself.
