Sheffield Steelers' roster building for the 2023/24 season has begun with the arrival of a new face at the Utilita Arena.
Defenseman Kevin Taney joins the Steelers after spending last season in Denmark. The 30-year-old scored nine goals and assisted on 11 others for 20 points in 43 Metal Ligaen games last season, while in 2021/22 he began the season in Czechia before switching to Košice in Slovakia. he spent two seasons in the ICEHL after arriving in Europe in 2019 following time in the ECHL and AHL.
"Kevin is a big two-way defensman that likes to play a physical game defensively," said Head Coach Aaron Fox. "He skates extremely well for his size and is a guy who can activate very well from the back end in transition.
"He will come in and log big minutes and can play in all situations. He’s coming off a good season in Denmark but has also excelled in some other top leagues previously. He brings a ton of character and experience to our group."
"I’ve spoken with Sheffield before and was close last season to heading over, I have some good friends that have played in the UK and for Sheffield, guys like Adrian Saxrud-Danielson, he gave me a glowing reference of the Steelers, the organisation and the fans," explained Tansey.
"We spoke about what was expected and Aaron told me I would be joining a good team with a good strong group of guys. I think he is expecting me to be a leader on the team and I’m certainly prepared to do whatever it takes to help the club win."
