Fife Flyers have confirmed the appointment of Tom Coolen as their new Head Coach for the 2023/24 season.
The announcement comes after the Scottish club confirmed that long-time Head Coach Todd Dutiaume, and Assistant Coach Jeff Hutchins, were stepping down following the conclusion of the past season. The Flyers made it to the Challenge Cup Final in 2022/23.
Coolen, 69, began 2022/23 in Michalovce in Slovakia before being replaced in November. Later than month, he took over at SC Csíkszereda in the Erste Liga before leaving in late January. This followed three seasons in Poland, two of which he spent in Katowice where he coached GKS to the 2019 IIHF Continental Cup Final in Belfast.
Over a long coaching career, the Canadian's highlights include a season as an Assistant Coach at the Buffalo Sabres
"I am really excited to be going to Fife. I have followed the Elite League more closely over the last few years. I competed against Belfast in the Continental Cup three years ago and am familiar with the caliber," said Coolen. "I look forward to icing a team that Fife Flyers fans can be proud of. A team that battles every game."
Fife Flyers’ Director, Tom Muir commented on the appointment, “We are excited to welcome Tom Coolen to the Fife Flyers. Throughout our search for a Head Coach, we knew we wanted someone with previous coaching experience and Tom comes to Scotland with an extensive amount of experience and a vast network of contacts at all levels. We’re looking forward to working with Coach Coolen as we continue to build his squad for the upcoming season."
