Foss suspended for spearing
Flyers forward receives suspension
On Sunday night in Fife, Flyers forward #27 Ryan Foss was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for Spearing.
As Fife forward #7 Tyler Heidt skates into his attacking zone with full control of the puck, teammate #27 Ryan Foss on the opposite side of the ice skating towards the backdoor. As Heidt passes the puck across the low slot, Blaze defenceman #15 Jack Hopkins cuts out the pass and the puck goes behind the net. Foss, Hopkins and Blaze defenceman #58 David Clements then battle for a loose puck. Hopkins gains control of the puck and heads into the corner with Foss and Clements still tied up. As Foss untangles his stick, he makes an unnecessary swiping motion with his stick which Clements reacts to and pushes Foss. Foss, with both hands on his stick, forcefully drives the tip of the stick into his opponent's thigh. This is Spearing.
It is important to note that with stick infractions, the vast majority of these plays can be sufficiently penalised by the on-ice officials. What causes this play to rise to the level of supplemental discipline is the intent and amount of force used. This is not accidental or inadvertent contact, where the stick can be used to limit an opponents movement with the stick positioned between the legs. Foss intentionally drives his stick into Clements with force.
Effective immediately #27 Ryan Foss is fined and suspended one game.
