Sunday: Giants could end the week top

Sunday in Week 20 of the 2024/25 Elite Ice Hockey League season brings three games, and could see a change of names at the top of the table.

Belfast Giants host Manchester Storm from 4pm with the hosts a win away from ending the week on top of the Elite League. Saturday's victory over Sheffield Steelers pulled the Giants back to within a point of leaders Cardiff, and with the Devils in Continental Cup Final action the Giants will make up their remaining game in hand today. Manchester blew a 4-1 lead at home to Fife on Saturday and lost 5-4, but but still have four games in hand to get themselves into a playoff place.

With the exception of Storm fans, most of the league probably delighted to see Fife win their first game since early December with a comeback victory in Manchester. The Flyers return home to face Nottingham with the possibility of a multi-point weekend for the first time in months. While still some way adrift at the foot of the table, the Flyers have shown in recent weeks that they are improving under head coach Curran. The Panthers arrive in Fife after stealing a win from the jaws of defeat on Saturday - two goals in the final five minutes saw them beat Coventry 2-1. Nottingham can cut the gap on the top three down to a point if they can get two in Kirkcaldy.

Coventry Blaze don't have long to get over conceding two late goals in Nottingham on Saturday when they host Guildford Flames at the Skydome. The Blaze looked like they were heading for an excellent road win until the Panthers found a pair of goals in the final five minutes. Guildford had a very different evening, scoring four in the first period to cruise to a 5-0 win over Dundee Stars. The two teams are locked on 34 points each in the middle of the table.
