CJ Mette saved 32 shots on his Coventry debut but that wasn't enough to earn his team a win. The Blaze did however get a late equaliser to earn a point before Guildford won in a a shootout.
Travis Fullerton made a fantastic save in the game’s first point of note early on, stacking the pads on the spin to deny Luke Ferrara. Guildford capitalised on that by scoring the opening goal a few minutes later with Ian Watters finishing a move on the powerplay at 7:26 that started in the Flames' own zone.
Guildford looked to be heading towards a one-goal win but the Blaze's superior shot count in the third period eventually saw them force an equaliser. Andrew Johnson was the visitors' hero 1:21 before the end of regulation time. With each team taking a point after 60 minutes it was then into overtime, but no goals followed.
Eventually, Guildford were to win things in a shootout - Ian Watters and TJ Foster scored for Guildford - Charles Corcoran, Janne Lakkonen, Luke Ferrara and Drew Schistel were all unable to find the net for the Blaze.
