Flames too hot for Flyers

Guildford Flames moved to within a point of fifth place with a 4-1 home win over Fife Flyers at the Spectrum.

The Flames led by one through 20 minutes, but there could have been more goals at either end. Olivier LeBlanc’s hard slapshot caught Eamon McAdam in the mask when he knew little else about it. Shane Owen made a successive of stops, including an excellent low-pad save, to keep the score level. Daniel Tedesco opened the scoring when he came in at the back post for Brett Ferguson’s feed at 14:27.

Fife could have levelled before the break but Lucas Chiodo didn’t get the shot that he wanted away while they broke 2-on-1.

Guildford took over the game in period two. Ryan Tait struck at 21:43 for the home side’s second powerplay goal of the game, followed 83 seconds later by Lewis Hook to make it 3-0. The Flyers had some half chances to get on the board, but found themselves four down at 31:22 when Brett Welychka re-directed a Charlie Curti shot past Owen.

With the period winding down, Daniel Tedesco must have thought he was going to score were it not for a fantastic, diving Owen stop.

Charles-Antoine Paiement was ejected 3:56 into the final period for an Elbow, but the visitors held out during the five-minute kill. The Flyers got on the board at 49;54 while the home side sat a Too many men call with Kieran Craig the scorer. That was where the goals ended, although the Flames almost scored on the empty net in the final seconds with the puck just topping short of the line.
