A narrow win in Nottingham live on FreeSports was enough to keep Sheffield Steelers top of the table going into 2020.
An intense opening period saw no goals, but the game came to life in the second. Pressure in the offensive zone from the Panthers eventually led to the opening goal - Adam Deutsch shooting from the boards and Georgs Golovkovs tipping in front of the net. Sheffield were level four minutes later as Janne Kolehmainen tipped Aaron Brocklehurst's shot after a faceoff win, and before the end of the period the visitors had taken the lead.
Michael Davies was the man to put the Steelers ahead at 35:58 after the Steelers kept the pressure on. Jonathan Phillips was left all alone in the slot to fire home at 49:10 and put the Steelers two goals ahead, but the last five minutes were to be tense thanks to Mark Matheson pulling a goal back for the Panthers.
There was not to be an equaliser, however, and Sheffield held on for the win.
