New Cardiff Devils Head Coach Jarrod Skalde has added to his roster for 2021/22 with the signing of Matt Register.
The Alberta-born defenseman won the ECHL's Kelly Cup three years in a row from 2016-2018 with the Allen Americans and Colorado Eagles. He was voted the Playoff MVP in 2018, and was selected as the league's Defenseman of the Year three times.
The 31-year-old has spent the past two seasons under contract with the Iowa Wild in the AHL, splitting time between there and the Americans in the ECHL. In 2020/21, he scored five goals and assisted on 47 others for 52 points in 66 ECHL regular season games.
“To put it simply, Matt is a proven winner. He has been one of the top defencemen in the ECHL for the last number of years and his defensive game is as strong as his offensive side," said Skalde.
"He has been at or near the top of the scoring charts for defencemen, an all-star nearly every year and seems to play his best hockey in the big games.
"He wants to win, he has done it before and has a real desire to win again, which is a big reason he was attracted to Cardiff."
