Cardiff Devils edged past Manchester Storm in a shootout after only two goals were split by the teams through 65 minutes of hockey at the Storm Shelter on Thursday evening.
Ben Davies thought he'd given Cardiff the lead early in the first period but his goal was ruled out for a high stick after video review. Justin Crandall did, however, ensure the visitors led by the first intermission with the game's opening goal just past 16 minutes. Stephen Johnson got the final touch on a loose puck around Taran Kozun's net to tie things up with 8:20 left in period two.
The game remained goalless through the third period, while in overtime the home side survived an Anthony DeLuca tripping minor to see things decided in a shootout.
Trevor Cox scored the only goal in the first two rounds of penalty shots, and with no further goals it fell to Joey Martin to win it for the Devils in round four.
The result means the Devils have three straight league wins, while Storm have picked up a point against two teams from the top three in their last pair of games.
