Cardiff Devils thrashed Asiago Hockey on day two of the IIHF Continental Cup Final in Angers, France.
The Devils were beaten on Friday evening by the hosts 2-1 in a shootout after an enthralling game, and fell behind on Saturday night were ahead just 31 seconds in when Cole Sanford capitalised on an awful bounce in the offensive zone to shoot into an empty net with Justin Fazio totally wrong-footed. Brodie Reid made it 2-0 with 8:54 played while Josh Waller's powerplay goal put the EIHL side three ahead after 12:46.
Asiago, who qualified by virtue of winning the Alph Hockey League last season but moved into the ICEHL over the summer, were second best throughout although did get on the board 90 seconds into period two through Giorgano Finoro. Josh Brittain replied for the Devils 14 seconds later for a 4-1lead that the Devils carried into the second intermission. Trevor Cox out-waited the Asiago netminder before wristing home 69 seconds into period three for the 5-1 lead, with Josh Waller pulling a nice deke and five-hole finish for the Devils' sixth with 42:35 played. Stefan Fournier rounded off the scoring with 8:04 to play.
Asiago, coached by former Sheffield Steelers Head Coach Tom Barrasso, are now eliminated for the competition. The Devils will have a shot at the title if Nitra beat hosts Angers tonight, or otherwise could be left hoping Asiago can overcome the hosts on Sunday.
