Wednesday: Giants and Flames one game away from cup final

Belfast Giants host Guildford Flames at the SSE Arena on Wednesday night to decide which of the two will be the first confirmed finalist in the 2023 Viaplay Challenge Cup.

The Giants take to home ice with a four-goal aggregate lead after a shutout victory in Guildford last week, and know that if they do advance tonight then they’ll be hosting the final as the highest-seeded team to make it.

Adam Keefe’s team had a mixed weekend after that win in Guildford. His side let in three first-period goals in a 4-1 defeat in Cardiff on Friday night, but 24 hours later in Nottingham came back from three down to beat the Panthers 5-3. The Giants are the defending cup champions.

Guildford followed up their midweek home defeat to the Giants with a home loss to Cardiff, and, despite throwing away a two-goal lead in Coventry on Sunday, Paul Dixon’s men rallied to win in overtime to stay three points clear at the top of the league standings.
