Brassard suspended for spearing
Panthers defenseman receives suspension
On Friday evening in Altrincham, Panthers defenceman JC Brassard speared Storm forward #71 Anthony DeLuca.
With the play in the Storm attacking zone, DeLuca is looking to establish body position in front of the net and is battling past Brassard. As he does so, Brassard uses the toe of his stick to jab and make contact with the unsuspecting DeLuca. This is spearing.
The reason for supplementary discipline is the choice of contact Brassard makes with DeLuca. This isn’t a hockey play. Defencemen regularly use their body and stick to box out an opponent and clear the front of the net, however this isn’t the case on this play. All contact here, especially with the blade of the stick, is completely avoidable. The use of the stick in this manner is reckless with a high potential to injure DeLuca, who is unaware and unable to protect himself.
