Sheffield Steelers completed their goaltending line-up for the 2023/24 on Friday with two names confirmed on Saturday morning.
Anthony Morrone joins the team after sharing netminding duties last season in Ljubljana. The 24-year-old Canadian played 20 games for Olimpija in the ICEHL and stopped 88.4% of shots on a team that finished at the bottom end of the regular season. He has previously iced in the French and Alps leagues since heading to Europe in 2020.
"Anthony is a goalie coming off sharing the net in the ICEHL in Ljubljana. He played very well for a bottom-end team and is coming in to compete for starts alongside Matt Greenfield," said Head Coach Aaron Fox. "Anthony is 6’2, plays a aggressive style, and moves very well. He competes extremely hard and has very high character and is a great teammate which is very important when you have two non-homegrown goalies."
Also joining the Steelers British netminder Angus Laine. The Scot, also 24 years old, took last season out of hockey after spending five years in the USA but will begin his professional career in Sheffield. He previously played junior hockey in Sheffield alongside Cole Shudra and Liam Kirk.
"Angus is coming back into the country as our British goalie. He spent a few years in North America and is excited to join the squad and develop his game," added Fox. "This is a great opportunity for the three goalies to work together and give us the best chance to win every night. I love the look of our netminding trio."
