Flyers edge past Clan in exciting opener

Fife Flyers took bragging rights in the first Scottish derby of the season, beating Glasgow Clan 4-3 in front of a big crowd in Kirkcaldy.

Seven different players scored in the game which saw the Flyers lead 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 before time ran out on the Clan.

The visitors, under new head coach Corey Neilson, led through Rylan Schwartz’s powerplay goal 5:28 into the game. Phelix Martineau tied things up at 9:04, while a wonder wrist shot from Lucas Chiodo two and a half minutes later put the Flyers into the lead.

Michael Cichy scored the only goal of period two at 36:29, the Flyers’ second on the powerplay in the game.

Nick Prkusic pulled the Clan back to within one 3:19 into period three, before Drake Pilon was ejected for Interference after the officials checked the video. The goal that ultimately won it for the Flyers came through Maxim Musorov whose shot beat Landon Bow from the slot to restore the home side’s two-goal advantage with 7:47 to play. Daniel Krenželok was then ejected for a slew-foot to put Clan on a major penalty for almost the entirety of the remainder of the game, but it took them until 29 seconds from the end to find a way past Shane Owen – Liam Finley the scorer. Neilson pulled his goalie again with 24 seconds to go, but a late block by Johnny Curran saw the Flyers hold into the points.
