Sunday: Make or Break in Cup

Three Challenge Cup games on Sunday afternoon present a handful of teams with a chance to lock in knock-out stage action, stay alive, or face bowing out of the competition.

Nottingham Panthers face Manchester Storm in the game’s early start with the chance to guarantee themselves at least a spot in the ‘Elimination Game’ this season. A win ensures the Panthers will finish at least third in the group, while defeat for Storm would leave them needing to win their two remaining games and hope for favours elsewhere to advance. A victory for Manchester would leave them still with a very realistic shot of advancing into the next phase.

In Kirkcaldy, neither Fife Flyers nor Dundee Stars can afford to lose if they want to keep their chances of making the next round alive. Glasgow’s shutout victory over the Flyers on Saturday night was a bad result for both teams, but Dundee can cut the gap on Clan back to two points with a win tonight. Fife are already six points adrift and would be all-but eliminated with three games to go if they don’t pick up something here – they would be left needing to win out, and in style, as well as relying on other scores to go their way.

While Guildford Flames are already eliminated from the Cup, they travel to Cardiff hoping to turn around a very disappointing run of form of just one win in six following home defeat to Belfast on Saturday. They face a Devils team returning from a 4-2 defeat in Sheffield where they were heavily out-shot and only really kicked into gear in the final period. The Devils sit outside the top three places in Group A but have games in hand to make that up. However, a loss tonight would leave them with a lot to do in their four remaining games.
