Daniel Catenacci suspended for one game

Flames forward receives suspension

On Friday night in Manchester, Flames forward #7 Daniel Catenacci was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for Slew-Footing.

Flames forward Catenacci, who was positioned along the boards, attempted to make a pass to a teammate when Storm’s Grant Hebert put his stick in the lane to block the pass. Storm defenceman Joe Morrow picks up the loose puck and backhands it to a teammate who is skating through the high slot out of his defensive zone.

At this point, Catenacci comes off the wall and engages Morrow from the side. In doing so, Catenacci engages with his upper body ,forcing Morrow backwards whilst simultaneously extending his left leg to use as leverage to take Morrow down. These actions cause Morrow to fall dangerously to the ice. This is Slew-Footing.

It is important to note that there are many occasions where players use either their legs or stick and upper body to restrain, impede opponents or to gain leverage during a puck battle. Catenacci’s use of both his upper and lower body to take Morrow to the ice in a dangerous fashion, as well as Morrow not being aware of the incoming contact, elevates this to the level of supplementary discipline. This is not a hockey play.

To Summarise:

  • This is Slew-Footing

Effectively immediately, Guildford Flames #7 Daniel Catenacci is fined and suspended one game.
