Sunday: Huge clash at top of table

It's a three-game Sunday afternoon across the Elite Ice Hockey League as Week 24 of the 2024/25 season comes to a close. And there's one game dominating the schedule.

At 4pm, league leaders Belfast Giants head to second-placed, and defending champions, Sheffield Steelers. The hosts have already seen on of their title defences go this week after exciting the Challenge Cup in Cardiff, and now entertain a Giants side that has a eight-point advantage at the top of the table. The Steelers do have two games in hand, but slipping to 10 points back with 17 games to go might be start to look that bit more difficult. Sheffield overcame that midweek loss with a come-from-behind victory in Guildford on Saturday night; Belfast, meanwhile, momentarily extended their lead at the top when they thrashed Fife Flyers on Friday.

In Kirkcaldy, Fife Flyers host Cardiff Devils with both teams hoping to end the week on a high. The Flyers were heavily beaten in Belfast midweek, and their wait for a first home win in months continues. The Devils had the euphoria of making the Challenge Cup final on Wednesday night followed by Saturday's defeat to Manchester leaving them 13 points off top spot with only two games in hand.

Coventry Blaze and Nottingham Panthers do it all again less than 24 hours after meeting in the Lace City. Saturday's game saw the Panthers lave with a 6-2 win after a flurry of scoring in the final period, keeping them in third. Coventry missed the chance to go into fourth with Cardiff also losing, but have now built themselves a four-point cushion ahead of Guildford in sixth.
