Adam Morrison has had quite a start to his Elite League career in Fife. The Flyers goalie has backstopped his team to three straight wins after their opening game loss, and the 28-year old has saved over 95% of the shots he's faced in both league and cup action so far.
Helping his team to a four-point weekend saw him chosen as our Player of Week 3.
"It was important for us as a group to get off to a good start in the regular season. We have two real solid tests in the Challenge Cup against Glasgow and Dundee, where i felt like we played well, and wanted to carry it on into this weekend just gone," began the Canadian. "Any time you come off the bus to play a road game the opposition has a bit of an advantage, but we weathered the storm in Coventry and did what we had to do to get the win. On Sunday against a very good Nottingham team we came out, stuck to our systems and gameplan, and it showed what we're capable of."
After a shutout in Dundee, was he disappointed to concede two late goals against the Panthers? "Not really, personal stats don't matter that much. The only statistic that anyone will ever measure a goaltender by, is how many wins he has, and does he effectively give his team a chance to win on a nightly basis," said Morrison. It would have been nice as a team stat, but at the end of the day we got the win and that's the most important thing."
Morrison spoke to us after finishing at university for the morning. "I'm studying for a BA in Science & Psychology. It's something that's always interested me, and I always wanted to learn a little more about what makes us as humans think and behave as we do," revealed the Flyers' goalie. "I have some ties to mental illness, and learning how to develop a support system for people has been something I was curious to go deeper into."
The travel from Kirkcaldy in Scotland down to arenas in England and Wales does however have its benefits. "All of our materials are available in an online library, so I download an article or a book and do the reading on the bus," Morrison added. "Managing time like this isn't something I've had to do before, but I enjoy having something to occupy myself with in downtime. As I've got older, I've found that I prefer to be busy than sitting around static!"
He concluded: "I spoke to Todd (Dutiaume, Head Coach) at length about where I was in my career and what I would be looking to do, and the schooling really influenced my decision to come to Fife. I never felt like I wasn't capable of playing in any league, but given my injuries over the past few seasons I also knew I needed to start preparing for post-hockey. The opportunity that I got from the Flyers, to play at a high level and study, was too good to turn down."
